Oxygen Acetylene Brazing

Oxygen Acetylene Brazing

If you are a beginner or you haven't brazed in awhile and want to build and repair using the oxygen acetylene torch, then this video is specifically for you.

We'll start off with torch selection.  Your choice of torch is directly related to the type of work that you plan on doing.  Is it going to be heavy, medium or light material?

I've found that when teaching people that lighting the torch can be intimidating.  I know it was for me when I started 40 years ago.  For this reason I go through this very slowly, step by step.

Now that you have your neutral flame, a quick explanation about flux and we're off and running, ready to braze.

brazing mild steel

A few simple basic brazes to get started.  Brazing two piece of metal of equal thickness together is easy.  Brazing two pieces where one piece is thinner than the other is more challenging.  I'll show you easy ways to compensate for brazing dissimilar thicknesses together.

"How close to hold the torch", is a frequent question and an important question.  The distance between the neutral flame and the metal to be brazed determines whether you get a good braze. Once you've seen this demonstration there won't be any doubt.

There is a section on brazing steel pipe followed by a section on brazing thin wall steel tubing.

One man used the ideas in this video to build some crash bars for his motorcycle.

Hot rolled steel is one of the most common materials around and it is the least expensive steel.  To use it in building or repairing you'll need to prepare the surface in order to get a good solid braze.

brazing thick metal

A short section on brazing thin and thick copper followed by a demonstration of brazing light weight stainless steel.

Followed by an overview of equipment you will need for brazing and some accessories you may want to add later.

For me, after using the torch for brazing all these years, brazing is a matter of "feeling rather than knowing".  In other words you can know all the technical terms and the chemical and physical characteristics of the materials, but still not know how to braze.  Which is why I don't us a lot technical terms.

The quickest way to learn how to braze is to use what I show in the video and then -.  Just Start!

Be assured that you can not make a mistake that I haven't made.  With a little practice you'll find yourself "feeling" when it is the right time to put the bronze rod between the flame and the work to be brazed.
