Steel Sculpture #1

This video assumes that you know how to use the Oxygen Acetylene Torch

The focus is on geometric standing sculptures using 1/8th inch mild steel.

The steps start with you choosing a design, cutting the shapes, welding the shapes together, grinding the welds, sanding and applying a spray finish.

Three options are shown for cutting the shapes. They are a shear, oxy/ace cutting torch and the plasma cutter.  Choose which ever one that you have available.

Emphasis on torch techniques for gas welding, broken down into three phases, tack welding, fusions welding and gas welding using the gas filler rod.

This video is about techniques!  Although designs are shown, the main focus is on technique. Once the techniques are established, you can then do any of the pieces shown and  go on to create your designs. The possibilities are endless.

These techniques require a minimum of tools and equipment.  An oxygen acetylene torch outfit, and a grinder/sander.  There are other tools that can be added, but these are the basics.

Instructions for using the Oxygen Acetylene Cutting Torch. These include using the cutting head and regulator settings.

For materials: 1/8th inch hot rolled mild steel and mild steel gas welding filler rod.  Hot rolled mild steel is about the most inexpensive metal that you can buy, yet enabling you to create outstanding contemporary sculptures.

Although you'll see me working on parts of the different designs illustrated in this video, we'll focus on one piece from start to finish.  This particular sculpture incorporates all the techniques involved in making any of the sculptures shown.

As explained in the video, one idea leads into another.  While working on one piece, you'll begin envisioning new ideas.

Once you get started with these techniques, you'll begin to understand what I mean when I say the the "possibilities are almost endless".

One of the finishes demonstrated is "rough texturing" the mild steel.  This is done with the oxy/ace cutting torch.  This finish can be used by itself, or in a combination of ground and sanded finished.

Banding or forming steel bands into graceful arcs is demonstrated.

Once you've got the techniques down you're on your way to  duplicating the designs in the video and creating your own geometric contemporary designs.
